Announcements for Week Ending October 8th
Symphonic Auditions for Low Brass
That's trombones, euphoniums, and tubas...
have been re-scheduled for Monday, October 4th from 3:30 to 6 p.m. in the Band Room. All low brass students will report at whatever time they signed up for originally. Assignments are still posted on the door to Mr. Scott's office. The results are posted for those who have already auditioned, and the low brass results will be posted on Tuesday, October 5th. (Percussion results, too.)
Symphonic Band Rehearsals
Symphonic Band full rehearsals will be held on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. beginning the week of October 13th. Please note this is one week ahead of schedule, as posted on the master calendar! Symphonic Band sectionals schedule will be announced as soon as we have those details worked out, so keep checking your e-mails and our website at cariobands.org.
Practice Charts Reminder, Again!
Practice charts are due EVERY SINGLE FRIDAY of the school year, and should be placed in the appropriate drawer of the box, which is marked by grade level, located on the table beneath the window to Mr. Scott's office. Practice charts must include STUDENT'S FULL NAME - FIRST AND LAST, have a WEEK ENDING DATE, and have PARENT SIGNATURE in order to receive credit. Practice charts are the homework for band class, and make up a full 15% of your student's grade! Many practice charts are being turned in with NO NAME, FIRST NAME ONLY, and/or ILLEGIBLE PARENT SIGNATURE. These charts receive no credit because nobody can figure out whose they are! Examples: practice chart turned in with no name at all, neither first nor last, and the parent signed "Beth;" practice chart turned in with no name at all, and the parent scrawl is completely illegible; practice chart turned in by "John," and illegible parent signature. Do you know how many Johns there are in the band??? These practice charts are then logged in by volunteers, and with 250 band kids, the situation is impossible! These unidentified practice charts are routinely stapled to the wall on the left hand side of the white board in the band room as an opportunity for students to identify their work. Most of them are never claimed. After about 2 weeks or so, we take them down and throw them away. There goes somebody's weekly homework grade! Parents, PLEASE READ THIS PARAGRAPH TO YOUR STUDENT!!! Daily practice is not just a recommendation, it's a graded component of the program! Practice charts are available in the band room on top of the practice chart box, and also on the website, click on "Forms", then scroll down until you find the one entitled "Practice Chart".
Students with School-Owned Instruments
For all students / families who have been issued school-owned instruments, we are now nearing the end of the first quarter. For students who do not have a contract on file and the agreed-upon payment credited to their account, you run the risk of forfeiting your instrument! Our treasurer, Becki Bowman, has contacted each of you, either by e-mail or stamped mail. Please respond to her right away and take care of your instrument rental obligation. The instrument rental agreement and payment schedule can be found on our website, click on "Forms", then scroll down until you find the one entitled "Instrument Rental Agreement".
Frankie's Fun Park!!
All students receiving a first quarter band grade of either "A" or "B" are invited to join Mr. Scott for an evening of fun and games at Frankie's Fun Park on Ashley-Phosphate Road. The date is Thursday October 28th from 6:30 to 8:30, so mark your calendars! Come do your best to beat up on your band director! He claims he's never been beaten on the go-cart track! Transportation and park entry fee "on your own" for this event. "Big Kids" welcome too! We need chaperones! Contact m3mom@aol.com or president@cariobands.org if you'd be willing to tag along and help us out! Parents, please be prompt picking up your students at 8:30 - the chaperones must remain on-site until all students have been released to their parents, so please be considerate of Mr. Scott and our volunteer chaperones!
"All-Hands" Band Booster Meeting
Our Fall band booster meeting is just around the corner, on Tuesday, October 12th at 7 p.m. in the Cario Gym. Our evening will begin with a brief performance by our 7th grade band, and end with the debut performance of our 6th grade band! All parents are asked to please attend! Call time for 7th grade students is 6:15 p.m. in the band room for set-up and warm-up. All 6th grade students are asked to please report immediately to the band room upon your arrival. Performing band students, please remember to bring your instruments, your music, and wear your brand-new Cario Bands shirt with blue jeans. (Parents - the band shirts will be coming home shortly with your student.) The agenda for this meeting will be posted to our website in the very near future. Also, the proposed budget for this school year is available for review. From the main page, click on "About our Program", then "Band Boosters", then "Financial Operations".
Dinner Cruise Tickets Still Available!
Yes, Cario Band Parents, you can still send in your response for the Dinner Cruise! The RSVP date of September 28th was "informal" to give as an early idea of how this would fly, but at this point, we are committed to the event - no backing out now! With the responses we have received so far, we've not yet covered our costs, which means this is a fund-user rather than a fund-raiser. If we have to, we will sell tickets until either the cows come home or we actually launch from Patriot's Point on October 24th. (We're hoping it won't come to that, and that people are just waiting for October 1st to roll around, and that our band parents will come through for us by supporting this great fundraiser!) If you have by chance lost your response card, tickets are $30 each, payable to "Cario Band Boosters," and may be mailed to:
Cario Dinner Cruise
1247 Colfax Court
Mt Pleasant, SC 29466
More Soon! Don't forget about the marching band competition this Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. at the old Wando football stadium! This counts towards the 3 concert requirement for the semester.
Thanks so much for checking in!
Pat McM. 216-3549.
