Announcements for the Week Ending September 30th, 2005

Okay, depending on the time of day, go get a cup of coffee and a doughnut or a cool drink and a snack -- this could take a while!!!

LAST CALL FOR STAGECOACH 6TH GRADE PANTS!!!

Bill at Stagecoach (in the Piggly Wiggly shopping center on the Isle of Palms connector) says there are still some students who have not come in to be fitted for the 6th grade black uniform pants. Not just any black pants will do.....there are different shades of black out there so, to have an overall concert performance look, only the black pants from Stagecoach will be accepted as the uniform pants for 6th graders.

The cutoff date has been extended because there are several new 6th grade families that came on board recently. The ABSOLUTE cutoff to be fitted and order the uniform pants is Thursday, September 22 by close of business at 7 PM. Your student will not be allowed to perform if they are not in proper uniform. After the cutoff date, you will have to make individual arrangements with Stagecoach and they cannot guarantee your order will be received in time for the fall concert.

We will also notify parents/students when the Stagecoach order has arrived so that you can go directly to the store for pick-up.

Band Night

Thank you for taking time from your busy schedules to attend the band meeting last night. We all are in new spots now and learning more about this program each day, so please be patient with us in our new jobs and as new forms and policies come together. As you 7th and 8th grade parents can imagine, we are missing Pat McMahon terribly by now, as she was the heart, soul, and work horse of this organization.

Thank you to all who have agreed to volunteer and help with the band program this year, you all are the ones who help make this a successful program for your student.

Tuxedos Must Be Ordered by October 3rd

If you could not attend the Band Night meeting and you are a parent of a 7th grade student, new 8th grade student, or an 8th grader who will needs some items replaced due to growth spurts over the summer, you must take your child to After Hours Formal Wear located at Citadel Mall by Monday, October 3rd for tuxedo measurements, ordering, and payment. After that date, After Hours cannot guarantee your student's tuxedo delivery in time for the fall concert.

The tuxedos will be delivered to the school. We will arrange a pick-up date when they are delivered. After the pickup date, any remaining tuxedos will be bagged and given to your student to carry home.

Required Forms

For those who were unable to attend Band Night, information packets will be given to your students to bring home. The packet will include your copy of the 2005-2006 Band Handbook, a volunteer signup sheet, an account statement, and the six required forms for participation in band. Please complete all 6 forms, have the medical form notarized and return the 6 forms to the band room by October 15th. Please take a look at the volunteer opportunities and pick one or two (or more!!!) to get involved in.the more hands we have, the easier the tasks and your help is what is needed to make this a successful program. If you have any questions regarding the forms or information, please do not hesitate to contact us at president@cariobands.org.

Band Fees

Account statements were handed out to parents at Band Night and will be included in the information packets mentioned above for those unable to attend. Your first installment ($75) of the band fees is now due. Please send a check made out to 'Cario Band Boosters' with your student's name on the memo line to the payment box in Mr. Scott's office. Checks should be in a sealed envelope with your child's name on the outside and marked Band Fees. If you have questions about your statement, please contact Nancy Oxendine, our treasurer, at treasurer@cariobands.org.

Practice Charts and Concert Evaluation Forms

Each student was given a packet of 4 practice charts and 1 Concert Evaluation Form to be placed in their black band binder to finish out this 9 week grading period. Please make sure you are filling out the practice chart each time they practice, signing each Thursday night so they can be turned in on Friday for the weekly homework grade. The first practice chart is due this Friday, September 23rd. Charts are to be placed in the appropriate grade drawer in the box on the table under Mr. Scott's office window.

Lost & Found

Okay, so you went to retrieve the practice chart out of your student's binder and, lo and behold!, you can't find the binder! So you ask where it is and Billy Band Student says, 'I dunno, I guess I lost it.' There is a Lost & Found box in the band room to the left of the table under Mr. Scott's office window and there are already brand new music books and binders in it. If your student has lost any band related item, remind them to check the Lost & Found box next time they are in the band room.hopefully, that will save you a little $$$ if they find it and don't have to replace it! Also, it is always a good idea to make sure your student's name and class are written on all materials.

Wando 8th Grade Night and Band T-shirts

Heads up, 8th graders! All 8th grade students in the Mt. Pleasant area will be performing with the Wando Band on Friday, October 7th. Rehearsal will be Thursday, October 6th. When details are received from Mr. Rush, Wando band director, we will post to you as soon as possible. For informational purposes only, last year, Thursday's rehearsal was 5:30-6:30 pm at Wando High School and Friday Band Night call time was 6:15 pm at old Wando High School, students were dismissed to parents after the halftime performance. This could change this year but it at least gives you a heads-up.

Uniform for the performance will be jeans and your Cario Band t-shirt. Mr. Scott will be ordering the t-shirts this week for delivery in time for 8th Grade Band Night. This will be taken care of during your student's class period.

Private Instructor Changes

Changes have been made to the private instructor list - some numbers have changed and instructors have been added, even since the printing of the handbook. For the most up-to-date information, click on the 'Private Instructors' button on the left side of the 'Handbook and Parent Information' page.

Car Pools

Please continue to email Nan at president@cariobands.org with information on car pool needs or car pool offers so that we can accommodate as many students as possible if instruments become more restricted on the buses. Information needed is name, address (including subdivision and section, if applicable), phone number and number of slots you have available if offering and instrument your child plays if you need a car pool.

Lowcountry Invitational Marching Band Competition

Wando High School Band will be hosting the Lowcountry Invitational Marching Festival at Wando football stadium on Saturday, October 1st starting at 2:00 pm. There are at least 14 bands competing in this festival and this is a great opportunity to see lots of different marching styles and hear many different kinds of music. Middle school students who wear their band t-shirts will be admitted free of charge. Wando Marching Band is not competing in this festival but WILL be performing that evening in an exhibition. This is a fun way to get one concert credit out of the way for the semester - grab a program, enjoy the show, and turn in your Concert Evaluation form.

Coat Drive

The first 'Cario Bands Together' community service project of the year will be a coat drive to benefit East Cooper Community Outreach. It will run from October 1st through October 18th. Look for a flyer to come home with your student next Friday, September 30th.

Visit Us On the Website

Please try to visit us 2 to 3 times a week on the band website. This is the most effective means possible for us to communicate with band families -- the opening page, "New and Notable' is updated on an almost daily basis. The address is http://cariobands.org. If you would like more information on what each button covers and where things are on the site, email Nan at webmaster@cariobands.org and I'll be happy to send you a Word document that goes through the whole site.

That might have actually taken TWO cups of coffee to get through...and my fingers are cramped!!

'Til next week,
Nan & Becki
