Announcements For the Week of April 15, 2009
Welcome back to school. I hope everyone had a great Spring Break!
Concert Update
Alert!!! The Jazz/Percussion Concert scheduled for next Thursday April 23, 2009 has been postponed and will be rescheduled. We will get you the information as soon as we get it.
Carowinds Update
Mr. Scott has taken the Carowinds trip for the 6th grade band OFF suspension. The trip is now on pending NO further behavioral issues. In order to maintain your spot on the trip, you must send in your payments now. The payment deadline for the Carowinds trip is this Friday, April 17, 2009. Please remember that in order to be eligible to travel on trips with the band, ALL fees must be current. This includes the yearly band fees of $175 and the Carowinds trip fee. Paying one without paying the other will render your child ineligible for trips. Starting Monday, April 20, 2009 any child on the waiting list who has paid all of their band fees in full will be given priority over those that may currently be on the trip list but have not paid all fees. If a child is bumped from the travel list for non payment of fees, he will be placed at the bottom of the wait list. A list will be posted in the band room tomorrow morning (April 16, 2009) reflecting each student's trip status. If the the child is listed as CONFIRMED, then no action is needed. If there is an ASTERISK * by the child's name, you will need to contact Mary Dinda at Uniforms@cariobands.org as soon as possible in order to clear up any issues outstanding. Please check the band homepage for the link to Carowinds information.

The Wando HS Percussion Ensemble and Jazz Band
April 17th, 7:00pm
Wando Performing Arts Center
I hope everyone will have a chance to see the Percussion Ensemble and Jazz Band concert on Friday, April 17.
Here are a few highlights:
- Ms. Middleton’s AP Art Class will create a live 12’ x 6’ painting that interprets the song Axe Ax. Imagine seeing a painting this large created before your very eyes in under seven minutes!
- Spoons?? Is that really a percussion instrument?
- The Jazz Band, with members of the Wando Orchestra, will perform a powerful version of Feelin’ Good that will feature Josh Radecke on vocals (Lanie Radecke’s husband). Do not miss this show stopper!
- We have new percussion instruments that will be unveiled during one of the songs.
- Mr. Schultz, ninth grade academy science teacher, will play accordion while Jessica Crum, our new dance instructor, dances to an amazing song entitled Ice Dance.
- Ms. Carroll’s stage tech students will create a light show that will enhance the beautiful melody of Smetana’s The Moldau.
- Pinckney’s Orff Ensemble will be performing! (Yep…little drummers in the making)
- And finally, the Percussion and Jazz Department has created the Student Artist Spotlight Award, which showcases one outstanding student artist. This year’s winner is Taylor Epps. Ms. Epps will put on her first solo art show in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center the night of our concert. Get to the show early so you will have time to see the amazing work of this young artist.
As you can see, the Percussion Ensemble and Jazz Band students have been working hard to present an entertaining and creative show…we hope to see you there!

Wando Marching Band Auditions
******Cario students will have Wando band auditions on the following dates. Percussion--Monday, April 20, 2009 at Wando (time to be determined). Monday, May 11,12,13, 2009 are the audition days for all other 8th grade students. Mr. Rush will be coming to the band room at Cario for these 3 days. To prepare for these auditions, the kids should be practicing their scales, sight reading, and their Wando audition solos (which they already have).
For those students who will be moving on to the Wando Marching Band this summer, The Wando band has posted the summer rehearsal schedule on their band web site for help in planning summer vacations. It is extremely important to attend all of the listed rehearsals, so please try to schedule vacations around them. The following link should take you to their web site where the schedule is located on the first page "Summer 2009 and Fall 2009 Calendar". www.Wandobands.org
Wando Newsletter
The Wando Band has sent out their most recent news letter. As an active band parent, the first article in this news letter struck close to home for me. If you are currently debating whether or not to let your child move on into the Wando Band program; or if you are already committed to continuing your child's involvement in the musical arts, this piece should help you make your decision or if already made, confirm your committment. It is not a fluff piece that extols the generic virtues of music instruction, but rather speaks from the heart about one man's belief in music as an inherent part of each of us. Please take the time to read and share this with your kids.
