All County Auditions – 7th & 8th Grade

A message from Mr. Scott:
All County auditions are at West Ashley HS this Saturday, Dec. 5th. Dress is Sunday dress. No jeans, shorts, flip flops, tennis shoes or clothing that says Cario on it anywhere are allowed. I will send an information packet home Wednesday with kids. Please read it carefully as it contains necessary information for the audition. Students are responsible for knowing their code and audition times. They are posted on the band office door. I will not be available for questions on Saturday since I am judging, so students must get their info together before then.

All Students who are auditioning for All Region Band on January 9th MUST purchase the original book containing their solo. The book is not needed for All County, but All Region will disqualify them without it. It can be purchased at Music and Arts, Pecknel music and probably Mt. Pleasant Music. Call the stores first to make sure they have it in stock.

West Ashley High School is located at 4060 W. Wildcat Blvd., Charleston, SC. Take I-526 to SC 61-N.Ashley River Rd. (exit 11B). Merge onto Paul Cantrell Blvd. (This road becomes Glen McConnell Parkway.) Go approximately 2 miles and turn left onto Wildcat Blvd. West Ashley High School will be on your right. Students should arrive one hour before their audition time in order to find their audition room, warm up area and have time to warm up and prepare for audition. Do not be late for your audition!

Holiday Concert Schedule

Call time for both concerts is 6:00 p.m. All students must be in concert attire. Uniforms must be clean and pressed. 8th grade Jazz Band will wear their formal concert attire (tuxedos & dresses) not their jazz band uniform. Girls with long hair must pull their hair back. No jewelry is allowed except for small, discreet stud type earrings for young ladies. Please see page 9 of the handbook and below for more information on concert attire.

We need the assistance of 2-4 parents to help supervise the 6th graders both before and during the concert. Please contact president@cariobands.org if you are able to help out with this.

We could also use the help of several students after school on the concert dates to help set up for the performance. If your student is available after school, they should tell Mr. Scott they can help and on which day.

A reminder also to our parents as audience members. As we are educating our students on what is acceptable and expected behavior as performers, we remind all that it is good manners and expected that an audience remains until the end of a performance to show appreciation for all the performers' efforts. Students will not be excused until the entire performance is completed and our equipment has been returned to the bandroom.

6th Grade Concert Attire

Concert attire for 6th grade students consists of black Cario Band polo shirt, black pants from Stagecoach, black belt, black socks and black dress shoes. No tennis shoes allowed. Students not in uniform will not be allowed to perform. There are still a few uniforms in the bandroom that have not been claimed.

7th & 8th Grade and Jazz Band Concert Attire

Concert attire for 7th & 8th grade students - boys must wear their tuxedo (white pleated tuxedo shirt, black tuxedo slacks, vest and bow tie), black dress shoes and black socks. Girls must wear their black dress, black shoes and black-tinted hose. Students not in uniform will not be allowed to perform. Students who are in both Chorus and Band will wear the Chorus uniform if performing for both groups at the concert. No medals are to be pinned to the uniforms. There are still a few uniforms in the bandroom that have not been claimed. Please be sure that your student’s uniform fits. Requests for size exchanges should be forwarded to Mary Dinda at uniforms@cariobands.org by Thursday, Dec. 3rd.

Smart Music

All students must activate their SmartMusic subscription. There are quite a few students who have not done so. SmartMusic is a requirement for class and grades are being taken for assignments this nine weeks. Failure to activate and enroll in SmartMusic will seriously jeopardize your student’s ability to pass the class.
If you are having problems with SmartMusic, please take the following actions before contacting the directors:

Submitting Assignments – all grades

When submitting an assignment, only the text is required, not the recording. Submit a recording ONLY if it is requested in the assignment. The exception to this is mallet percussion; recordings are required for submission. There will be no additional SmartMusic assignments until after the concerts next week EXCEPT for assignments related to concert music for 7th & 8th graders.

Pass Offs - 6th Grade

In addition to SmartMusic assignments, students are required to pass off as many lines as possible from the Essential Elements 1 book. This book is accessible on SmartMusic. Lines passed off determine chair placement for 6th grade. Passed off lines should be emailed to Mr. Scott at director@cariobands.org. Please be sure your student includes their name in the email, otherwise it is difficult to know whom the email came from and the student will not receive credit. Please combine several lines in one email. You can do this by saving the grade, which is saved in the SmartMusic folder in My Documents, then copying and pasting several grades into one email. This makes it much easier and quicker for Mr. Scott to keep a record of lines a student has passed off. If you are unable to send via email, then the grades can be printed several to a page, name included and turned in to the assignment box in the bandroom.

Band Fees

The final band payment of $50 was due on November 24th. This applies to those students who are not fundraising and have not paid the fees in full. Checks or cash may be deposited in the lockbox in Mr. Scott's office or mailed to Cario Band Boosters, 1121-B Park West Blvd., Box 224, Mount Pleasant, SC 29466. Please be sure to include on the memo line of your check your student's name and the purpose of the check. If you are sending in cash please put it in an envelope marked with the student's name and purpose of the payment.

TubaChristmas Concert

The annual TubaChristmas Concert will be Monday, Dec. 14th at the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul in downtown Charleston at 7:30. The Cathedral is located at the corner of Coming and Vanderhorst Streets. This is a free concert and will be conducted by our very own Mrs. DuPuis. Think concert opportunity! This annual concert is a lot of fun and all tuba and euphonium players grade 7 and above are invited to participate. Rehearsal is Monday, Dec. 14th at 4:30. Please contact Mrs. DuPuis, asstdirector@cariobands.org for more details if your student is interested in performing.

Fruit Pick-Up

The fruit pick up is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 12th, from 9 a.m. to noon. The pick up will be at the St. George Warehouse located off Clements Ferry Road. More detailed driving instructions will be sent out as the pick-up date nears. Remember that the product is perishable and delivery to purchasers should be within 48 hours. If you can spare some time to help on Dec. 12th, or if you need more service hours, please contact Kim Brower at fundraising@cariobands.org.

Thank you to all of the volunteers that came out to help with the pie pick-up as well as the parents who came out to pick up their orders. It all went very smoothly.

Forms

All band forms can be turned in at either of the concerts. We will have notaries available to notarize your medical forms. Please do not sign your form until you are in front of the notary and remember to have a photo ID with you.
