Announcements For February 25, 2010

Wind Ensemble (formerly Symphonic Band) Rehearsal

In order to alleviate any confusion between 7th grade symphonic band and Symphonic Band (the performing ensemble), the directors have chosen to rename Symphonic Band the Wind Ensemble.

Rehearsals at 7:15 a.m. Please be on time as there is limited rehearsal time in the morning. Our students are working very hard and hopefully will not need to add too many extra rehearsals.

Region Band Clinic Feb. 26th & 27th

A Region Band Clinic information sheet was sent home with your student and is available at cariobands.org. On Friday, please remember to send $4 with your student for a pizza lunch and extra $ for snack money (snack money optional). Parents are responsible for transportation to and from the Region Band clinic. The clinic will be held at Charleston Southern University which is on Hwy 78 off of I-26. The schedule is 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. There will be a concert on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. The students will need to be in full concert uniform for that performance.

A message from Mr. Scott about Practice Charts

There is no other question I am asked more than "why was my child's grade so low". The answer is simply PRACTICE CHARTS!! It is difficult to fathom why so many kids just won't turn them in and willingly accept a low grade when they have EARNED a higher grade with their practice. I am constantly amazed by how many students accept C's, D's and even F's instead of turning in practice charts.

We will not know, and more importantly, will not give credit for a grade on a hunch that a student PROBABLY practiced. My computer and the school's grading system will not assume that since they are a good kid, they PROBABLY did the work.

Parents, practice charts are REQUIRED every week. They DO have bearing on the grade. Without them, your child will NOT make an A, or even a B for that matter. I know the kids think that since they are easy to do, they can't be important, but they are.

In addition, it paints the perspective that the child doesn't value our expectations or policies. In turn, that may affect their band placements at Cario and beyond. Yes, the high school teachers DO ask about their grades. If your child has done the work, then make sure they get the credit by turning in their signed practice charts every week. I am asking both parents and students to be diligent in this matter and I thank you for your attention. There seems to be a lot of confusion about practice charts, so I wanted to provide a clear answer for you.
